چکیده

A global MHD simulation of an isolated substorm that occurred on March 9, 1995 is presented. The simulation, driven with solar wind data provided by the Wind satellite, reproduced to a surprising degree the evolution of substorm activity. The onset of the expansion phase was coincident with the penetration of an electric field spike into the nearEarth region. This impulse launched a tailward propagating signal (rarefaction wave) that enhanced reconnection in the mid tail. Substorm intensification was correlated with th'e enhancement of the reconnection rate at the preexisting reconnection region located at 30 Re. The importance of the electric field spike in correlating ionospheric and magnetospheric aspects of the substorm is emphasized.

Association of Pi2 pulsations and pulsed reconnection: ground and Cluster observations in the tail lobe at 16 RE

Simultaneous measurements from the Cluster spacecraft and several ground stations (SAMNET, IMAGE, Kakioka, Hermanus) provide evidence for an association of Pi2 pulsations and pulsed reconnection in the magnetotail. On 8 September 2002, substorm-related Pi2 pulsations were recorded with the same waveform (same frequency) in the tail lobe at 16 RE and time-delayed on the ground (both nightside an...

Automated determination of auroral breakup during the substorm expansion phase using allsky imager data

This paper describes a novel method for quantitatively and routinely identifying auroral breakup following substorm onset using the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms all-sky imagers. Substorm onset is characterized by a brightening of the aurora that is followed by auroral poleward expansion and auroral breakup. This breakup can be identified by a sharp increas...

Relation of the auroral substorm to the substorm current wedge

The auroral substorm is an organized sequence of events seen in the aurora near midnight. It is a manifestation of the magnetospheric substorm which is a disturbance of the magnetosphere brought about by the solar wind transfer of magnetic flux from the dayside to the tail lobes and its return through the plasma sheet to the dayside. The most dramatic feature of the auroral substorm is the sudd...

Vertical evolution of auroral acceleration at substorm onset

This study describes the onset process of auroral substorms in connection with the vertical evolution of auroral particle acceleration, on the basis of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) dynamics. We show that the auroral acceleration process at substorm onset basically consists of two stages: (1) appearance/intensification of a low-altitude acceleration region at 4000–5000 km accompanied by in...

Relative timing of substorm onset phenomena

[1] In this paper we examine the temporal ordering of midtail flow bursts, Pi2 pulsations, and auroral arc brightening at substorm onset. We present three substorm events for which the Geotail spacecraft was situated at local midnight, near the inner edge of the plasmasheet. We show that high-speed, convective Earthward directed plasma flows observed by Geotail occurred 1–3 min before auroral o...
